Meter Out Flow Control Circuit

Meter out controls restrict fluid leaving the cylinder to retard the cylinder s movement.

With a meter out circuit a flow control valve is installed on the return side of a cylinder so that it controls a cylinder s actuation by metering its discharge flow. Meter in is a method by which a flow control valve is placed in a hydraulic circuit in such a manner that there is a restriction in the amount of fluid flowing to the actuator. The flow control operates by controlling the actuator outlet pressure at the level required to oppose the forces exerted on the. This type of flow control circuit works for any type of load and works best with air operated devices. The meter out circuit can control overrunning as well as opposing loads while the other one method must be used with opposing loads only.
In the meter out operation shown in figure 6 39 the direction of the flow through the circuit is simply changed as can be made out from the diagram. In a hydraulic meter out circuit the flow control valve is installed on the cylinder return line. It is the opposite of a meter in operation as this change in direction will cause the fluid leaving the actuator to be metered. Two fmda cartridges can be used to create a 3 position 4 way proportional valve with both meter in and meter out control as shown in sun s cushion lock circuit to the right.
The relief valve in meter out circuit typically set at slightly lower than the cylinder operating pressure. For overrunning load forces and or those with a large mass meter out control is used where the actuator outlet flow during its extension passes through the restrictor as shown in the circuit.
